In the course of the Allied landing operation of June 6, 1944 (Operation Overlord), US forces advanced from the beaches of Normandy into the hinterland. Jack Lieb documented this advance in color as one of the few cameramen to do so. The scene is situated in the context of the early ground combat phase in Normandy, which, following the securing of Utah Beach, aimed at establishing a stable front line and the push toward Cherbourg.
