This photograph belongs to the landing and advance phase of Jack Lieb’s color film, which documents events surrounding D-Day (June 6, 1944). Following the landing at Utah Beach, Allied forces advanced rapidly into the Normandy hinterland to break through German positions of the Atlantic Wall and secure Cherbourg. Lieb’s 16mm Kodachrome footage captures this advance in color—a rarity, as nearly all comparable documents from this phase have been preserved in black and white.
